Anthony Campion est un prêtre anglican plutôt libéral dans l'Australie des années 30. Il est assigné à une curieuse mission : rencontrer l'artiste Norman Lindsay afin de le convaincre de ne pas exposer ses dernières oeuvres, surtout "La Vénus Crucifiée", une jeune femme nue sur une croix.
