A vingt ans, Pierre Jouffroy est un jeune révolté, qui refuse toute idéologie. Pourtant, à la mort de sa mère, il devient responsable de Nathalie, sa jeune sœur et doit, pour elle, trouver un travail stable. Il fait alors appel à un promoteur, Hubert Beaufils, qui lui propose son aide en échange d'une relation homosexuelle, ce que Pierre refuse catégoriquement. Peu après, il abat Beaufils en pleine rue. Nathalie, quant à elle, est placée dans une institution près de Calais, où Pierre va lui rendre visite.
