L'homme se livre à la prière, au jeûne et à la méditation. Lorsqu'il rend ses mains à un voleur à qui on les avait coupées en guise de châtiment, ce dernier s'empresse de gifler son fils. Il bénit des insectes car « ça occupe, et puis ça n'offense personne » mais est surtout en butte aux attaques du Malin, d'abord dans ses rêves : une danse œdipienne avec sa mère, qui vit mélancolique dans une hutte au pied de la colonne. Le diable lui apparaît sous plusieurs formes: une femme qui passe, une fillette au cerceau qui découvre ses cuisses et sa poitrine adulte, Jésus ricanant qui donne un coup de pied au doux agneau. Lorsqu'un « jet » les emmène ensemble à New York, peignés et la barbe bien taillée, Simon voit les beatniks se livrer à une danse nommée « chair radioactive ».
