Peru, early 2000s. Alfonso wants to be a writer, but he decides to work first as a journalist. He is assigned to the crime section of a newspaper, a job from which he can know the nasty guts of tabloid publications.

Grandpa is about to turn 80. His son and grandsons begin a journey to his homeland, Huamachuco, a place he has not seen since he was 9 years old. Along the way they discover an unexpected past and the journey will become a path of no return.

The father of Janet's unborn child has the money they need. And they have decided to take the respect they are owed. Above the girls lives Fredy. He is in love with Álvaro, who has AIDS. Together they have established a shelter where people infected with HIV can find company. But Álvaro is dimming. Fredy won't accept it, but Alvaro has little time left. Maria earns her living fishing in a northern Peruvian village, working alongside her husband. But when her husband is called away to work on larger industrial fishing boat, Maria, who is pregnant, finds ways to act out her anger.

They are almost considered a part of the families or, at least, that’s what it seems… But one day, as the city is taken over by violent protests, a birthday celebration gathers all the members of both families together. A long-held secret involving both households — upstairs and downstairs — is suddenly revealed, blowing up the bubble of their perfect aristocratic world forever.
