Pendant les vacances de Noël, Gabriella Montez, une lycéenne timide, rencontre le beau Troy Bolton, lors d'une soirée de karaoké à la station de ski. Bien qu'ils soient très différents l'un de l'autre, les deux chanteurs en herbe vont découvrir qu'ils partagent le même amour pour la musique et qu'ils sont inexplicablement attirés l'un par l'autre... De retour au lycée, Troy s'aperçoit que Gabriella n'est autre que la nouvelle élève de l'établissement ! Ensemble, ils décident de participer à l'audition pour jouer dans la comédie musicale de l'école.
