Zer is the story of a song, whispered to Jan's ear on his grandmother's deathbed. A survivor of Dersim Massacre, Zarife hid her identity, her past in her memory of this song. Raised in NYC, Jan begins a journey through Kurdistan, searching for his grandma's past and his own self.

Mızrap is a 40-year old man who is deemed "no good". He lives in a small town in the province of Antakya. His father throws him out as a bluff, while scolding him, after Mizrap loses his job. But Mizrap, stung by his father's words, calls him on his bluff and leaves his father, mother, sister and niece to go on a cross-country trip to stay with his old army buddy Salim, who lives in a village near Mersin. Across the hard way he meets a number of representatives of marginalized groups in Turkish society.

In conversations with her parents Yıldız and Mustafa as well as her brothers Taner and Onur, she goes on a painful journey into the past. Political persecution of the Alevi-Kurdish family in Turkey, the flight to Europe in 1989, several racist attacks, depression and excessive demands on the parents – the effects on the three siblings are different. Dealing with the experiences and strokes of fate causes different reactions in them. Bektaş quickly realizes that the uncertainty about Taner’s fate in Turkey is only a reflection of her life experience as a family in exile.
