En Pologne. Un fonctionnaire de la censure cinématographique, ancien critique, autrefois poète, mène une existence morose et convenue entre sa secrétaire et un assistant flagorneur. Il ne comprend pas pourquoi sa fille méprise son travail, qu'il croit utile et noble. Un beau jour, les personnages d'un mélodrame, excédés par la stupidité de leurs rôles, se révoltent sur l'écran d'un cinéma. Ayant enfin retrouvé un sens à donner à sa vie, grâce à un cinéma qu'il a passé son temps à détruire, le censeur est chargé de ramener les personnages à la raison...
