Le 18 juin 1940. Clément, condamné à mort, doit être guillotiné. Il doit son salut à un bombardement et aux papiers du sergent Lafarge, mort dans l'attaque d'un chasseur allemand. Sous l'identité de Lafarge, Clément s'embarque pour Brazzaville, puis part pour le Tchad où il se distingue. Il est promu lieutenant et décoré, mais il se rend compte qu'il a usurpé la gloire de Lafarge qui s'était conduit en héros. Clément apprend la vérité sur son compte à Monge qui lui conseille de se taire. Yvonne, la fiancée de Lafarge, découvre l'imposture de Clément, elle renonce à le dénoncer et s'engage comme infirmière. Clauzel, un ancien compagnon de Lafarge, arrive en Afrique et reconnait en Clément un imposteur. Il avoue et il est condamné à la dégradation militaire. Il se porte pourtant volontaire pour une mission dangereuse et meurt héroïquement.

The Goss family live on a farm they call the dust bowl where the wind blows during the day and the coyotes howl at night. When the train is robbed, everyone thinks that Cotton and Violet were the ones that did the job, but no one has any proof. US Marshal Lloyd Richland comes into town in disguise to find the truth and he finds that the sheriff is corrupt and that the Goss family is gosh darn nice. They take in Richland and a stranded woman named Mary without any questions. Cotton believes that Sheriff Tatum shot their pa in the back, and the sheriff is now trying to plug the boys. Richland is looking for the train robbers, and at the same time is keeping an eye on Tatum and the lovely young Mary.

The new boarder at a Washington, D.C. rooming house for women likes the fast life, but her recreational activities lead to her involvement in murder.

Based on a play by Phoebe and Henry Ephron, "3 Is a Family" is a 1940s farce. Charlie Ruggles plays a hubby whose bungled business schemes force his wife, Fay Bainter, to enter the workplace. The couple's daughter, Marjorie Reynolds, shows up with her twin babies in tow. Son Arthur Lake arrives with his pregnant wife (Jeff Donnell). And overbearing maiden aunt Helen Broderick also decides to move in. Because his wife is away at work, poor old Charlie Ruggles is not only housekeeper, but nursemaid and servant as well.
