Dans les rues sombres et désertes de la ville croate, deux heures avant la nouvelle année, trois histoires d'amour s'entremêlent. Trois couples se trouvent sur le square : Nick le petit dealer et la veuve Maria, Maja une jeune junkie en crise et Franky le marin américain dépressif, et un couple d'adolescents naïfs, Luke et Angela.
