Jacques Audoin falls in love with a pianist, Evelyne Clery, and marries her. In reality, he had wanted to approach her, because he imagined that she had witnessed the murder of the lover of his first wife. Evelyne learns what has happened and, revolted by what she thinks is her husband's plot, commits suicide. Jacques confesses his crime.

This three-part movie begins with a young woman married to an older, cold-hearted man in the year 1200. Two rivals have a swordfight over the affections of the woman. Part two takes place in 1910 and finds an amorously unfaithful wife taking on her many lovers while her unsuspecting husband lurks nearby. The final part finds a count and countess engaging in extramarital affairs in France during the 1840s.

Jeune repasseuse de 20 ans, Marie Muscat est fiancée à Prosper, un garçon timide qu'elle n'aime pas, qui est parti pour une période militaire de quinze jours. Un matin, elle croise son voisin de palier, Claude, un peintre sans argent ni succès qui lui souhaite «bonne chance». Un petit bonheur survenant peu après, elle décide de prendre un billet de loterie et, superstitieuse, de partager avec lui si la fortune lui sourit. Le billet lui faisant gagner le gros lot, elle s'acquitte de sa promesse auprès de Claude qui l'invite alors pour un voyage «en camarades», avant le retour de Prosper.
