Lors d'une permission, Tom sloan rend visite à la veuve de son ami george. Il en tombe finalement amoureux.Il découvre aussi que Brady est fiancé à la soeur de la veuve Campbell. En novembre 1943, le lieutenant Sloan est désigné pour rejoindre la compagnie commandée par Brady, qui doit débarquer sur l'atoll de Tarawa. Sloan décide de dénoncer Brady au général mais le débarquement va avoir lieu et la compagnie de Brady fait partie de la 1ere vague d'assaut. Les deux hommes vont à nouveaux se retrouver ensemble dans les combats.
