Un éboueur d'une trentaine d'années souffrant de problèmes mentaux dus aux violences physiques et psychologiques subies dans l'enfance par sa mère et ses compagnons, poussés à tuer par un personnage fictif qui « vit » dans la maison avec lui. Ses histoires sont entrelacées avec celles d'un jeune de treize ans issu d'une famille aisée, qui sauve de la noyade après une tentative de suicide, et d'une femme, connue sous le nom de "la mère", qui enquête de manière indépendante sur des épisodes de violence contre les femmes.
