Eleven-year-old Rena has been living in a pleasant orphanage since she was young. She cares for her “siblings” so much that she often makes trouble every time a potential adopter comes. But when a mysterious guest, Yudha, arrives, Rena is worried that she has come to adopt one of them.

Ummi Aminah, a 68 years old ustadzah (the term originally means teacher but in Indonesian urban contexts it often translates to Islamic preacher), has loyal congregation. She has seven children. Like other Muslims, Emak, -a kind old lady, is eager to perform the pilgrimage (Haj). Unfortunately, she does not have the money to fulfill her wish. Her daily cake sales are not enough, and her widower son Zein, merely hawks his paintings around the neighborhood. Zein sees her persistence, and wants desperately to realize Emak’s wish. But the unfinished problems of his failed marriage, makes him feel helpless. Meanwhile, Emak’s wealthy neighbor has gone for the Haj (the major Mecca pilgrimage) many times, as well as the Umrah (or the minor Mecca pilgrimage).

Ca Bau Kan relates the saga of Giok Lan, an Indonesian woman living in the Netherlands, who returns to Indonesia in search of her roots. Her mother, Tinung, a village woman, was known as ‘Ca Bau Kan’ – a word used to describe a courtesan who entertained Chinese men in colonial Indonesia. Giok Lan’s father, Tan Peng Liang (Ferry Salim), was an immigrant Chinese merchant who had a very successful tobacco business in Batavia. She becomes deeply involved with him, and causes a scandal when he has Tinung move in with his family. The film is set between 1930 and 1950, and unfolds the story of Giok Lan and her parents: Tinung and Tan Peng Liang where Tan is eventually ruined when his rivals begin to attack him. This is owing to the significant contrast in socio-economic and cultural background, as the love of these last two characters face a series of difficulties.
