The story of a spirited ten-year-old girl who has run away from her proudly affluent parents in town and finds grudging refuge with the slightly slovenly caretaker of an abandoned farm, an ex-teacher.

Ewa is a reporter. Using her feminine charms and other means she is trying to become a journalist on a Warsaw weekly popular magazine. She hopes to become political interviewer of personalities and state leaders. On her way up the ladder she trips over one of her own shoestrings and falls short of the goal she has been pursuing so fanatically.

A provincial town in the early 1980s. Among its residents is the Kolęda family. Mrs. Kolęda is an energetic community leader, her husband, a gentle soul, takes care of raising ducks and cultivating flowers in "tunnels" at home. Their daughter, Dorota, is a pretty and unemployed young woman. The intrigue begins when the community leader finds out that she is going to become a grandmother. Fear of losing authority, scandal, and embarrassment inspires her to come up with a truly diabolical idea - they need to buy a fiancé for Dorota with a pre-arranged divorce.

The film presents the story of Robert - an aging, once-recognized artist who is today struggling with his own complexes and vices, and helplessness towards a new reality that ruthlessly throws him to the margins of existence. One day Robert finds himself in a roadside ditch hit by a dog's car. In a reflex of spontaneous compassion, he takes the dog home and begins to look after him.

Au cours de l'été de ses 10 ans, dans un décor baigné par le soleil d'une lumière dorée, Stefek observe les trains défiler dans la petite gare de son village polonais. Elevé par sa mère qui tient une modeste épicerie, et épaulée par sa grande soeur de 17 ans, il ne perd pas espoir que son père revienne.Il s'amuse de bouts de ficelles et se persuade qu'il peut jouer avec le destin. Un jour, assis avec sa soeur sur le banc de la gare, Stefek voit un homme, monter dans un des trains. Il est persuadé qu'il s'agit de son père. Il séjourne près de la gare en semant ses pièces de monnaie sur les rails et en jouant de ses soldats de plomb "porte bonheur" pour que le destin lui sourit et fasse revenir son père.
