Au cimetière, il est abordé par le major Calloway, pour qui Lime n'était qu'un vulgaire trafiquant, une crapule. Choqué, Martins décide de mener une enquête sur le défunt. Il fait bientôt la connaissance du mystérieux baron Kurtz, l'un des deux témoins de l'accident, l'autre étant un Roumain du nom de Popescu… Palme d'Or 1949.
