Hanna mène une existence plutôt enviable. Psychothérapeute dans une prison en Bavière, elle exerce un métier qui la passionne. Dans cet établissement de haute sécurité, elle a monté une unité de thérapie sociale qu’elle dirige avec poigne et collègues et détenus la considèrent avec respect. Mais à dix jours de son mariage, la vie de Hanna bascule : Peter Petrowski, un détenu qui avait fait l’objet d’une expertise positive de sa part, la prend en otage dans son bureau. Convaincus qu'elle maîtrise la situation, ses collègues, tout comme les forces de l'ordre, restent en retrait. Violée à plusieurs reprises, Hanna reste aux prises de son tortionnaire pendant sept heures qui détruisent son existence. Pour se reconstruire après le drame, elle décide de se battre. Lors du procès, la jeune femme se confronte à son tortionnaire et porte plainte contre le personnel de la prison et les forces de police.
