In this drama, the harsh treatment of women in Chinese society is examined and subtly commented upon as it tells the tale of an impoverished woman living in Shanghai, circa 1910 who tries to support her brother and sister-in-law. A marriage to a wealthy man is arranged for her, and reluctantly she endures it, even though she does not love the man who is as cruel as he is wealthy. His mother is also brutally unkind to her. She then has a son, but her struggles are not over when her husband dies and only leaves her a modest inheritance. Her wretched life has made her bitter, and so she begins making her son suffer as she die; she also becomes addicted to opium.

Réalisé par Ko I-Chen, qui a aussi participé dans "In Our Time", un des films qui a marqué le début du Nouveau cinéma taïwanais.

L'histoire dans les années soixante de Xiao Si'r, jeune adolescent, fils d'un réfugié politique chinois qui vit à Taïwan. Comme tous les jeunes gens de sa condition il fréquente les gangs qui se mènent une guerre sans merci.

Marthe, jeune française de dix-huit ans arrive à Taipei où elle vient retrouver Marcus, un homme rencontré à Londres et dont elle s’était éprise. Mais lorsqu’elle arrive chez lui, Marthe est confrontée à la nouvelle compagne de Marcus. Elle est bientôt prise en charge par Ginger, une amie de Marcus qui est à la tête d’une agence d’escort girls. Désœuvrée et perdue dans cette ville inconnue, Marthe se lie avec un gang de jeunes taïwanais à l’influence malsaine…

Une maison close de Shanghai, au XIXe siècle. Wang, un haut fonctionnaire, habitué des lieux, entretient depuis longtemps une relation avec l'une des courtisanes, Rubis. Depuis peu, pourtant, il fréquente une autre demoiselle, Jasmin, afin de provoquer la jalousie de sa maîtresse officielle. Un soir, arrivant à l'improviste, Wang surprend Rubis dans les bras d'un acteur de l'Opera de Pékin. Ivre de rage, il saccage son appartement et détruit les cadeaux qu'il lui a offerts. Dans la foulée, il décide de prendre Jasmin comme seconde épouse…
