La famille Polini, d'origine italienne, tient depuis des années une boulangerie-pâtisserie qui fait le bonheur de ses clients. La maman est à la caisse pendant que son fils Marco confectionne les douceurs avec son oncle Fabrizzio. Mais les affaires vont mal et Fabrizzio envisage de vendre la boutique à une chaîne de donuts. Après avoir goûté à un excellent gâteau, Marco rencontre le chef pâtissier du restaurant, Grace Carpenter. La jeune femme ne supporte pas la condescendance de Marco alors que lui la trouve trop snob. Un jour, Marco tombe sur l'annonce d'un concours réunissant les meilleurs pâtissiers du pays...
