Natsumura Chihiro travaille comme enseignante dans une petite école primaire et intermédiaire sur une île isolée de Kagoshima. The main character, Yuzo Jumonji (Tozuka Junki), a struggling actor, has a part-time job at a supermarket, but he can't seem to put any effort into his job, which he doesn't like. One day, when he told his workplace that he wanted to retire to concentrate on his acting career, the chief cashier told him, "You can see the person's life from the contents of the basket." Follow Yuzo as he fantasizes about the lives of the customers from the ingredients in their baskets!

25-year-old Ichikawa Eiko works in general affairs. Even when she does her job properly, she doesn't get much recognition and is often scolded for even small failures. When she's depressed, she says, "I want to be praised", and gets overheard by her senior Bando. He tells her, "So enthusiastic, like the Nebuta Festival!" and "Ninja-like work!" and while she's confused by his way of praising, she gradually grows more comfortable with it. This communication begins evoking small miracles in the general affairs department and the company as a whole.

18-year-old Urano Suzu marries Hojo Shusaku and moves from Eba City to Kure City in Hiroshima Prefecture in the middle of the Pacific War. As Japan slides into a war it cannot get out of, the townspeople go on with their “ordinary” lives. Supplies are short, and family and friends get sent to the battlefield. Suzu and the Hojo family battle such anxieties as they try to live positively.

Set in the 1950's, a Japanese Antarctic research exploration team and 19 dogs that accompanied the team are stationed at the Showa Base in Antarctica. After a year, the exploration team is ordered to withdraw from the Antarctic station due to severe weather conditions. The dogs have to be left behind. The following year, the next team arrives at the Showa Base station and a miraculous reunion occurs between a dog handler accompanying the new tean and two dogs, Taro and Shiro, that are brothers.

Suzu Yukimiya, an obstetrician and gynaecologist who works at a hospital in a tranquil sea town, meets Issei Hiiragi, 10 years her junior. He works as a relic collector, a job that is gaining attention in the aging society of Japan. This is a love story between two people who are in charge of "The Beginning of Life" and "The End of Life".
