Le Met a réuni un casting idéal pour la nouvelle production acclamée de François Girard du dernier chef-d’œuvre de Wagner. Jonas Kaufmann, dans le rôle-titre du fou « rendu sage par la compassion », est aussi convaincant vocalement que dramatiquement obsédant, livrant un portrait tout à fait émouvant. René Pape est tout aussi convaincant en Gurnemanz, le vétéran Chevalier du Graal. Katarina Dalayman fait ressortir de manière passionnante les deux côtés de Kundry. Peter Mattei incarne Amfortas, le souverain angoissé du royaume du Graal, et Evgeny Nikitin chante le méchant magicien Klingsor. Daniele Gatti sur le podium révèle à la fois la sérénité et la tension dramatique de ce qui pourrait être la plus grande partition de Wagner.

Avec ses centaines d'acteurs, sa partition palpitante et son histoire d'amour et d'héroïsme dans l'Égypte ancienne, Aïda de Verdi est depuis longtemps un incontournable des scènes de tous les grands opéras du monde. Pour la reprise en 2018 de la monumentale production de Sonja Frisell de ce grand chef-d'œuvre, le Met a réuni une distribution véritablement étoilée. La soprano Anna Netrebko endosse le rôle-titre pour la première fois au Met, et la mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili incarne sa rivale, la princesse complice Amneris. Le ténor Aleksandrs Antonenko est Radamès, le guerrier que les deux femmes aiment, et Quinn Kelsey prête son baryton robuste au père d'Aïda, le roi déchu Amonasro. Le maestro Nicola Luisotti est sur le podium pour diriger cette représentation épique, filmée dans le cadre de la série de retransmissions cinématographiques Live in HD du Met.

A rarely performed bel canto gem, Rossini’s Semiramide returned to the Met for the first time in nearly 25 years during the 2017–18 season. Set in ancient Babylon under the reign of the mythic Queen Semiramis, the opera features political scheming, mistaken identity, divine intervention, and bloodthirsty revenge—not to mention one virtuosic vocal display after another. Soprano Angela Meade is the fierce title monarch, whose quest for power comes to a halt with the discovery that the object of her affection, the warrior Arsace—sung by mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong—may actually be her long-lost son. Together, the two square off in a pair of dazzling duets and deliver some of the opera’s most challenging arias. Bel canto specialist Maurizio Benini takes the podium to lead a cast that also stars tenor Javier Camarena as the ardent prince Idreno, bass Ildar Abdrazakov as the scheming Assur, and bass Ryan Speedo Green as the stern high priest Oroe.

Luc Bondy’s dramatic production of Puccini’s operatic thriller stars Patricia Racette in the title role of the jealous diva, opposite Roberto Alagna as her lover, Cavaradossi, the painter whose political ideals lead them both into tragedy. George Gagnidze is Scarpia, the villainous chief of police who wants Tosca for himself. Riccardo Frizza leads the Met’s musical forces in this powerful verismo score.
