Dans une ancienne maison de Hanoi, Bi, un enfant de 6 ans vit avec ses parents, sa tante et leur cuisinière. Ses terrains de jeu préférés sont une fabrique de glace et les grandes herbes au bord de la rivière. Après des années d'absence, son grand-père, gravement malade, réapparaît et s'installe chez eux. Alors que Bi établit peu à peu une relation avec lui, le père de Bi cherche à éviter son propre père et fuit le foyer. Chaque soir, il s'enivre et va voir une masseuse pour laquelle il éprouve un très fort désir. La mère de Bi ferme les yeux. La tante, toujours célibataire, croise dans le bus un jeune homme de 16 ans. L'attraction qu'elle ressent pour lui la bouleverse.

Saïgon, début des années 2000. Vu est apprenti photographe, Thang vit de petits trafics et Van rêve de devenir danseuse. Réunis par le tumulte de la ville, ils vont devoir affronter la réalité d’un pays en pleine mutation.

Set along the southern coast of Vietnam during the French occupation in the 1940s, water is everywhere, giving life and bringing decay and rot. Kim is 15; his father and step-mother have two buffalo, their lifeline as subsistence rice farmers. During the rainy season, there's no grass and the buffalo are starving. Kim volunteers to take the beasts inland to find food. On this coming-of-age journey, Kim sees men mistreat women, men fight with men, and French taxes rob the poor. He works for Lap, a buffalo herder whose past is entangled with Kim's parents, and he makes friends who will lead him to his place in the world.

Five friends went on a trip to get away from the bustling life of Saigon. What promised to be an unforgettable adventure for these friends turned into a nightmare all of them would want to forget, if they survive.
