Échappant à peine à une avalanche pendant des vacances de ski en famille dans les Alpes, un couple marié est plongé dans le désarroi alors qu'il est contraint de réévaluer sa vie et ses sentiments les uns envers les autres.

Nick et Sarah élèvent leur fille de 10 ans, Tilda, dans les environs de Londres. Malgré leurs problèmes de couple, Amadeus, père de Nick, s'installe chez eux à contrecœur. En effet, atteint de la maladie d'Alzheimer et veuf depuis peu de temps, il est désormais incapable de vivre seul. Si les tensions s'exacerbent au sein de la famille, Amadeus, dont l'humour et le charme n'ont pas disparu, noue une relation de plus en plus forte avec sa petite-fille. La patience et l'amour de Tilda à l'égard de son grand-père lui permettent de se raccrocher à la vie. Quand le vieil homme exprime le souhait de revenir sur les lieux de ses plus chers souvenirs, Tilda, sans prévenir ses parents, décide de l'accompagner à Venise...

Après une bavure, un inspecteur de police est contraint de démissionner et se retire dans un petit village isolé. Mais l'affaire est loin d'être terminée.

Michael Gaismair had extraordinary foresight and he dared to fundamentally question the church and the supremacy of the nobles – which of course did not please the authorities at all. Betrayal and imprisonment only fueled his passion for the concerns of the peasants and ensured that he was no longer content with reforms. In his thoughts and actions, he was in no way inferior to Martin Luther and Thomas Müntzer. His plans and actions brought him into contact with the Swiss reformer Ulrich Zwingli and the two kingdoms of France and Venice. His demands was far ahead of its time and already included points such as the separation of the church from the state, or the reduction of privileges. But the powerful Habsburgs knew how to prevent this and persecuted the Tyrolean leader until his death.

This film is the first of a two-part historical and biographical portrait of the communist politician and anti-fascist Ernst Thälmann. In early November 1918, Ernst Thälmann is an unwilling soldier serving on the western front. As the revolutionary movement at home is threatened by the betrayal of the Social Democrats and fissures in the working class, Thälmann calls on his fellow soldiers to put down their weapons and unite with the workers in the communist struggle at home. Thälmann’s qualms about which side he is fighting on continue, but when the local police attempt to prevent a shipment of provisions and supplies from reaching the people in Petrograd, he intervenes and the ship is unloaded. With this moment of clarity, Thälmann continues to follow his political convictions and joins the workers at the Hamburg uprising in October 1923.
