En avril 1941, des militants communistes serbes fuient les bombardements allemands et se réfugient dans une cave. Parmi eux, deux amis, Blacky et Marko, et une actrice, Natalija, convoitée par les deux hommes. Mais Natalija préfère jouer la carte allemande et frayer avec un officier, Franz. Peu à peu, Marko s'institue le seul intermédiaire entre les occupants de la cave et le monde extérieur. Au retour de la paix, il juge plus pratique de ne rien dire à ses camarades enfermés et leur cache la vérité. En 1961, tandis que Marko est devenu l'un des hommes de confiance de Tito, les résistants continuent de fabriquer des armes dans la cave, que l'habile Marko revend, empochant tous les profits. Sous terre, on célèbre le mariage de Jovan, le fils de Blacky…

The conflict between innocence and evil is the shortest definition of the leitmotifs of the film. The story is taking place on a winter day in a remote province, far from all major events that shook the world today. A young woman teacher goes to a remote village where he got the first job after six years of waiting. Happy and hopeful that her life finally begins ... The other main feature is similar to it. Male character returns from the war in which, in fact, he was not. The first day of the war he was wounded and spent eight months in the hospital. His first job as a taxi driver on an empty train station where there is not many passengers, but it offers the peace that he needs to overcome his trauma and that gives hope that he is finally something good to happen. But harsh times threaten to destroy the dreams of the teacher and taxi drivers. Fortunately the man who is young like them, but he has completely different goals in life.

Silent Gunpowder (Serbo-Croatian: Gluvi barut) is a Yugoslavian war film Based on a novel by Branko Ćopić and set during World War II, the film tells the story of a Serbian village in the mountains of Bosnia and its villagers who found themselves divided along two opposing ideological lines, represented by the Chetniks and the Partisans. These two opposing sides are personified in the Partisan commander Španac and a former Royal Army officer Radekić. Španac sees Radekić as the cause of villagers' resistance to the new, Communist, ideology and so the main plot axis is the conflict between them. At the 1990 Pula Film Festival, the film won the Big Golden Arena for Best Film, as well as the awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Branislav Lečić), Best Film Score (Goran Bregović). The film was also shown at the 1991 Moscow International Film Festival, where both Branislav Lečić and Mustafa Nadarević won the Silver St. George Award for their performances.

This movie reflects the history of Yugoslavia since the beginning of WWII (and similar to all ex-communist countries) to the last horrible events in Balcanian countries. Behind the comedy is hidden the pain of whole generations, which have suffered WWII, The Cold War, the war in Yugoslavia, the communism, the treachery of their own leadership, the fall. The film shows us the reality, as seen by those who feel unlimited love for their country and culture. Marko and Blacky represent the true leaders of the country, the soul of the nation and not without controversies. Once Upon A Time There Was A Country is an extended TV version of Emir Kusturica's Palme d'Or winning Underground.
