Michele, abandonné par sa femme, vit à Rome avec son fils dans un petit appartement. Il lui reste ses amis et parmi eux, Fabio, qui les persuade de monter un nouveau spectacle théâtral d'avant-garde. Afin de leur faire atteindre la quintessence de l'art théâtral, Fabio décide de soumettre le groupe à un entraînement psychique et physique extrême. Ses discours abscons mêlant Sade, la politique, le Living Theater, Foucault laissent son entourage dubitatif. Fabio cherche le soutien de professionnels et tente par tous les moyens de séduire un critique théâtral renommé. Il prend aussi l'initiative de faire participer le public à sa création... Michele, de son côté, n'arrive pas à retrouver l'âme-sœur...

Rome, 70s. Rocco and Antonia, high school students, meet during a political rally. The two young people share age, political ideas, dissatisfaction with their parents. Moreover, by attending, they realize they have fallen in love. It is the discovery of sex and passion. After some time, however, their relationship goes into crisis.

A parody of Manzoni's canonical 19th-century novel "I promessi sposi" (The Bethroded) from the point of view of the villain Don Rodrigo, who, however, in this upended version of the story is the victim rather than the perpretator of the violence.
