L'armée rouge était composée de bolcheviks (communistes) ayant pour but de renverser complètement les tsars. Ils pouvaient compter sur certains communistes, sur la République socialiste fédérative de Russie, sur la République socialiste soviétique d'Ukraine et sur la République socialiste soviétique de Biélorussie. La guerre civile poussa les rouges à établir le communisme de guerre. Des choses qui se sont gardées dans l'URSS se sont mises en place à cette époque comme la censure des médias et c'est à ce moment-là que le parti communiste devient un parti unique.
