Francisca est une jeune femme portugaise qui vit au Brésil depuis un an. À la demande de sa mère, elle reçoit Teresa, une amie avec laquelle elle avait perdu le contact. Tandis que Teresa découvre, enchantée, le nouveau pays où elle veut s’installer et ainsi fuir la crise de son pays, Francisca décide de retourner à Lisbonne. Le film suit les aventures de chaque femme dans la ville et la profonde amitié qui naît entre elles, les obligeant à expérimenter des désirs opposés : l’envie de s’en aller dans un pays inconnu et le besoin persistant d’avoir un chez soi.
