Exhausted by odd jobs and a lack of money, Siru manages to lie her way into becoming a fake doctor by a series of misunderstandings. Her new relationship with lawyer Niko is hopefully true, although it seems that not only Siru but several of her close friends are also lying. Some of them even lie for a living.

L'histoire d'Anna se déroule sur l'île d'Åland en 1666, au début de la chasse aux sorcières les plus répandues et systématiques dans l'histoire scandinave. Au total, 16 femmes ont été reconnus coupables d'être en ligue avec le diable, et sept d'entre eux ont été exécutés. Pour le juge Psilander, qui a maîtrisé les nouvelles théories de sorcière du temps, les essais sont destinés à nettoyer l'île de la superstition, d'avoir la science et le bon sens prévalent. Le personnage principal, l'intelligent et têtu Anna, obtient une vue intime des événements, juste après avoir commencé à travailler comme femme de chambre dans la maison du juge. Pour le malheur d'Anna, elle tombe intensément amoureuse de son mari ami Rakel Elias, mais son infatuation avec elle disparaît rapidement. Un blessé et jaloux Anna décide de se venger et rapporte faussement Rakel au juge Psilander. Il est seulement quand Rakel est arrêté.

Stars above follows the stories of three women from the same family across three different decades. The main characters – Saima, Tuulikki and Salla – each lives in the same country house. Saima´s story takes place in the war time 1942, when Finland fought against Soviet Union, Tuulikki´s story in colourful year 1978 and Salla´s story in the present day. Each woman is between 30 and 40. This deep and beautiful, yet humorous film pictures the encounters between people and the possibilities for choice. How much does the time we live in affect us - and our ability to hold on to our dreams? What are those things which we pass on from one generation to the next? What changes, what remains the same? And to what extent do mothers´ choices, let alone their unspoken secrets, affect their daughters´ lives?
