Au Mozambique, en pleine guerre civile dans les années 80, un seul train permet aux civils de rejoindre le Malawi voisin pour y troquer du sel contre du sucre et gagner un peu d’argent. Ils sont des centaines à risquer leur vie durant ce voyage de 700 kilomètres qui peut prendre plusieurs semaines sur une voie constamment sabotée et attaquée par les rebelles. La jeune infirmière Rosa veut rejoindre l’hôpital où elle doit travailler et devient vite un objet de désir pour les soldats qui protègent le train, dont Taiar et Salomon, deux gradés que tout oppose. Entre les balles et les rires, Rosa et Taiar se rapprochent, alors que le train progresse vers son prochain arrêt...

Azarias is a young orphan shepherd, keeper of a herd of oxen, where the ox Mabata Bata stands out. The oxen will be the basis of the "lobolo" payment, a traditional dowry that his uncle Raul must pay for his own marriage. Azarias’ dream is to be a normal child, to go to school, gold that is supported by his grandmother. One day, when Azariah is in the pasture, Mabata Bata steps into a mine - the result of the civil war in the country - and explodes. The young man fears his uncle's reprisals and flees to the forest, taking with him the remaining oxen. The grandmother and uncle leave in their quest to rescue him and persuade him to return.
