La comédie à succès d’Adolphe Adam fait son retour sur les planches de l’Opéra Comique, qui virent sa création il y a près de 200 ans! Lors de cette production de 2019, menée d’une main de maître par le metteur en scène Michel Fau et le directeur musical Sébastien Rouland, l’opéra comique en trois actes qui fit de son compositeur une star internationale enchante une nouvelle fois le public, après avoir été absent des salles depuis 1894. Juste après son mariage à Madeleine, la belle aubergiste de Longjumeau, la voix de Chapelou, jeune postillon, est «découverte» par le directeur de l’Opéra de Paris, de passage dans le bourg, et le voilà parti en ville afin de devenir une célébrité. Sa fougueuse Madeleine est en état de choc, mais demeure déterminée à retrouver son mari. Leurs chemins se croisent de nouveau 10 ans plus tard, et la plus délicieuse hilarité s’ensuit.

A nunnery or love? Love or money? Money or death? – On her way to the monastery, the young Manon is wooed by men. When Chevalier Des Grieux turns up, they fall in love and decide to escape. They live in Paris, money is scarce, family honour injured. And so Manon agrees to have Des Grieux abducted at his father's command, and begins a new life with a rich man. While she lives in the lap of luxury, in his pain Des Grieux decides to take holy orders. Manon learns of this and is able to change his mind. Again they live together: their love is enormous, money is scarce, and luxury and the casino beckon. Accused of cheating at cards, they are arrested; Des Grieux is released, but Manon is sentenced to a women's prison. Money is supposed to save her, but already she is too weak ... Bellezza (Beauty) admires herself in the mirror, but knows that her beauty will one day pass. Piacere (Pleasure) tries to cheer her up, promising her eternal beauty if she remains only faithful to pleasure. Bellezza promises never to leave her, or else to accept severe punishment. Piacere warns of the destructive power of useless worry, but now Tempo (Time) and Disinganno (Disillusion) get involved in the conversation. Together they seek to explain the ephemeral nature of beauty, which quickly wilts like a blossom.
