Benjamin d'une famille de bucherons de sept enfants, le Petit Poucet rapporte un jour à Rosemonde, fille du roi, son cerf-volant bleu. Mais après cet aperçu du monde riche, le petit garçon est abandonné dans la foret par ses parents qui ne peuvent plus le nourrir. Poucet retrouve son chemin grâce aux cailloux qu'il a semé sur son chemin. Une seconde fois, les parents tentent de perdre leur progéniture dans les bois. Effrayés, la nuit arrivant, Poucet et ses frères entrent dans une cabane qui n'est autre que celle de l'ogre mangeur d'enfants... Pour s'enfuir, Poucet devra chausser les bottes de sept lieues...
