The film is loosely based on Alexandre Dumas’ play about the celebrated actor Kean, who moves effortlessly through all walks of life in 1830s London. One evening he’s in the company of counts and princes, and the next he’s enjoying the company of poor artists at the city’s pubs. A series of infatuations drive him into a complicated love drama. A female ‘gypsy’ – in the parlance of the time – must choose between helping her own camp or a kidnapped girl. The woman once fell in love with the local count. However, without hesitation, the count left her heartbroken for a rich aristocratic girl who seduced him. Years later, the count refuses to pay alms to the gypsy camp, so a couple of desperate gypsies decide to kidnap his five-year-old daughter. Marcus Bloomer, a district attorney, receives a divine revelation the night before he is to sentence a young man to death. The herald of the revelation takes the form of Bloomer’s former sweetheart Reine, who shows him the greatest mistake of his life: twenty years ago, Bloomer chose his career over Reine, who birthed a fatherless child. La veille du Nouvel An, le meurtrier Strong Henry s'évade de prison et va chercher son fils à l'orphelinat. Lorsqu'il s'introduit dans un manoir local pour y chercher du lait pour son enfant, il est surpris par une jeune femme, Eva. Par pitié, elle décide d'aider l'étranger, mais malheureusement, les autres occupants du manoir se réveillent et appellent la police. Quatorze ans plus tard, Henry sort de prison. Convaincu qu'Eva l'a trahi, il entreprend de se venger et de retrouver son fils.
