The story begins in a small rural village in Ladimirevci, Eastern Croatia in 1943, where a land owner Sima is helping the Partisan Movement and the official Ustasha regime in order to save the life of his son Beneš, who is enlisted in the German army. Sima doesn't want to let his son fight for the wrong side any more, and doesn't want to give him to the Partisans either, so he hides him in his attic for the time being. The story is interwoven with episodes of Sima trying to muster a beautiful stallion - Sokol - who only answers to his son Beneš and clearly doesn't like his old man.

En 1939, dans le Kentucky. Jeune motard excentrique et rebelle, Grady ne voit qu'une solution pour échapper à la prison : intégrer l'armée et devenir le caporal instructeur d'une brigade motorisée. Un savant et sa fille, enlevés en Espagne par des hommes à la solde du général Franco, fournissent à Grady ainsi qu'à ses recrues l'occasion de remplir une mission pleine d'aventures et fertile en rebondissements. Une fois sur place, la fine équipe se met en position et cherche à ne pas se faire remarquer. Malheureusement, il est plus facile d'échafauder des plans parfaits que de les réaliser. La petite expédition tombe ainsi assez rapidement sur les premières difficultés...

Zagreb, Yugoslavia in 1890. A group of high-school students run away on an adventure that ends in scandal. The ringleader, Gusta, is expelled from school and sent to stay with his uncle in rural Turopolje. Here, a totally new world opens up to him, where the internal tragedies of the people are played out against the castle of Brezovica and a small town of wooden-framed houses. People end up in this idyllic exile because of some previous "sin" and try then to make the best of their lives there. But memories of the outside world impinge on their happiness.

The main character is a cop who browses trough the streets and city's underground where he finds himself in a series of unsolved murders, drugs, smugglers, corrupt government officials, sex, hookers and blackmail. His Name is Marko Prilika - called Cens (Chance). Even though he's a cop, he's no stranger in a world of cocaine use and hookers.

The story begins when we learn that the lives of the main characters, although quite different and seemingly unrelated, are actually intertwined on multiple levels. Through a series of unfortunate circumstances, a great friendship and business partnership of Matko and Zoran rudely ended.
