Le 10 avril 1912, le nouveau transatlantique britannique Titanic, luxueux paquebot de 269 mètres de long, quitte Southampton pour une traversée inaugurale à destination de New York, emportant à son bord quelque deux mille deux cent huit passagers. Le 14 avril, vers 23 h 40, le vapeur file dans l'Atlantique alors que la fête bat son plein à tous les niveaux des classes sociales, quand la vigie signale un iceberg droit devant. Malgré le changement de cap immédiat, l'énorme masse de glace éventre la coque sur une longueur de 100 mètres. Après avoir rapidement évalué les dégâts, les ingénieurs rendent leur verdict sans appel : le Titanic est condamné à couler dans les délais les plus courts... L'équipage fait alors mettre à l'eau les canots de sauvetage, tout en étant conscient que tout le monde ne pourra y prendre place. Au loin, l'équipage du Californian assiste au naufrage sans saisir la gravité de la situation.

With the mysterious blonde nowhere to be seen, Conquest soon becomes the police s number one suspect with Inspector Williams following his every move. In order to clear his name, Conquest enlists the help of Pixie Everard (Joy Shelton), but the going gets rough when he discovers that the murder is connected to a stash of stolen diamonds. As gun-happy gangs of communists and Nazi sympathizers turn up the heat, Conquest has to solve the murder whilst staying one step ahead of both the gangs and the police.

Reservist Tommy Smart - who has made his fortune since the war selling army surplus - arrives at an army camp, with his chauffeur/valet, for two weeks' training. Bank manager Corporal Jones is in Tommy's squad. Sylvia, Jones' daughter, wishes to marry Lieutenant Robson, a National Service officer. Smart is under the orders of his old enemy Sergeant Thickpenny and R.S.M. Brittain; various parade ground antics ensue.

Entertaining ensemble piece dealing with several characters who are on the way to the races on Derby day. It cleverly blends dramatic, romantic and comic elements, including the woman and lover who have murdered her husband, and the working class couple who are excited about their chance to go to the races, but end up listening to it on the radio in the car-park because they've got such a bad view.

Doctors Burke and Hare leave the confines of St Swithins for the world of general practice, stopping off on the way as patients at the Foulness Anti-cold Unit. Hare then takes up a position as junior in a well-healed G.P.'s surgery while Burke continues to sow his doctorial wild oats.
