Un paysan du Bengale, Shambhu, refuse de vendre son lopin de terre à un riche propriétaire terrien qui en a besoin pour construire une usine. Furieux, le propriétaire lui réclame alors le paiement immédiat de ses dettes. Le tribunal ne lui ayant accordé que trois mois de délai, Shambhu se rend à Calcutta dans l’espoir d’y trouver un travail lucratif.

Two men take shelter in a derelict mansion situated in the countryside during a storm. One of the men suddenly becomes aware that he once visited this mansion in a past life; he recounts a story about when he was Anand, a painter, who fell in love with a tribal girl named Madhumati.

The movie revolves around a young mischievous boy named Mirza who is sent away to his uncle's home for further studies. Mirza is passionate about archery and is an expert at it. He starts living with his uncle where he meets his uncle's daughter Sahiban.
