Palerme, les années 70. La famille Ciraulo vit dans un quartier misérable de la ville. Suite à la mort de leur fille, tuée lors d’un règlement de compte, la famille découvre qu’il existe un fonds d’indemnisation des victimes de la Mafia… Le père décide alors d’investir dans une luxueuse voiture : plus qu’un symbole de richesse, elle deviendra l’instrument de leur défaite et de leur ruine.

In the Sicily of the late 1940s, two brother sculptors, tired of selling madonnas to the local churches, finally realize their dream, and set up a Sicilian production company, thanks to the help of a local bishop. They start producing one box-office failure Z-movie after the other, all with terribly bad local non-pros as actors. Covered in debts, they finally have their great chance, when a local nobleman obsessed by magic decides to invest all his wealth in the making of a movie about Cagliostro, just one year after Orson Welles' Black Magic (1949). They hire a famous American actor (Robert Englund) and start shooting "The Return of Cagliostro".

New York, 1943. Arturo rêve d’épouser la belle Flora, déjà promise à un chef de la mafia new-yorkaise. La seule façon d’obtenir sa main est de la demander directement à son père, resté en Sicile. Arturo s’engage alors dans l’armée américaine. Il est loin d'imaginer que l'armée a scellé un pacte avec la mafia pour assurer le débarquement en Italie…
