Les années 50, aux États-Unis. Perry Smith est une sorte de grand enfant, plein d'admiration pour Dick Hickock, un vrai dur, qui vient de purger une lourde peine de prison. Perry suit partout son idole, comme dans un rêve. Vol de voiture, long périple dans la nuit : Perry le mal-aimé se sent bien avec Dick. Et puis un soir, c'est le drame. En prison, Dick a entendu parler du magot des Clutter, une famille de fermiers. Dick et Perry décident de cambrioler les Clutter, mais leur coup tourne mal et, pour une somme dérisoire de quelques dizaines de dollars, ils assassinent les parents et leurs deux enfants adolescents…
