En Pologne. Un fonctionnaire de la censure cinématographique, ancien critique, autrefois poète, mène une existence morose et convenue entre sa secrétaire et un assistant flagorneur. Il ne comprend pas pourquoi sa fille méprise son travail, qu'il croit utile et noble. Un beau jour, les personnages d'un mélodrame, excédés par la stupidité de leurs rôles, se révoltent sur l'écran d'un cinéma. Ayant enfin retrouvé un sens à donner à sa vie, grâce à un cinéma qu'il a passé son temps à détruire, le censeur est chargé de ramener les personnages à la raison... Ewa decides to end her romance with Alek. From the mountain guesthouse they go by car to Warsaw. . . Kim, after being released early from prison, returns to his wife, Jola, who lives in a lonely house. Here he finds a man who claims he has been hired for hard work. Kim wants to find out if Mietek is not Jola's lover.

1929: The little girl Józia has to go a few days without her mother, who is traveling abroad for political reasons. Another story is told to the neighbors after Józia visits her relatives in the country. But 10 days can be an eternity for a small child.

A teenage boy attempts to define himself and answer the most important questions troubling him.
