After Annunziata (Angela Molina) opens up a hostel with her friend Antonio (Daniel Ezralow), she is saved from being raped by a Camorra boss as the gangster is suddenly killed. The killer escapes before Annunziata is able to see who it was. Following this murder are several others, and always with the same “signature” — a syringe in one of the testicles of the victims. As the gangsters continue to be killed off, the identity of the killer – or killers – slowly becomes obvious.

Luciana, a country girl who has moved to Milan, is married to Mario, an intellectual type who avoids her since an accident forced him to live with his torso permanently in a cast. Lonely and depressed because also of her recent dismissal, she asks for help through a letter and becomes friends with elementary school teacher Anna, who also resents the negativity of her workplace and the world around her. Meanwhile, blue collar worker Marco waits for his fellow paisan Luciana to reciprocate his feelings. The vicissitudes of this quartet intertwine with the comical interludes of a commune of hippies who live in the tunnels of the Milan subway and spend their time pulling pranks on the passers-by.

Lulù Massa, véritable stakhanoviste du travail, est ouvrier modèle dans une usine métallurgique : grâce à son extrême rapidité, son rendement est cité en exemple par son patron. Les autres travailleurs ne voient pas d’un bon oeil ces cadences infernales, et il est détesté de ses collègues dont il méprise les revendications sur les conditions de sécurité au travail. Bercé par les rêves de la société de consommation entre son amie, son fils Arturo resté avec sa mère après le divorce de ses parents, sa voiture et sa télévision, Lulù réalise parfois la vanité de la vie qu’il s’impose. Alors qu’il se coupe un doigt accidentellement les autres ouvriers, par solidarité, se mettent en grève. Cet événement provoque en lui une profonde remise en question. Lulù décide alors de s’investir dans l’action syndicale et engage toute son énergie dans ce nouveau combat. Il soutient alors la nécessité d’une grève illimitée…
