A travers ses récits, ses histoires, son travail de réalisatrice, il se dessine un parcours, un passé, des désirs, des fantasmes. On pénètre de plus en plus dans l'intimité de cette femme, de son couple qui se fait et se défait au fur et à mesure du tournage. Il est question de sexualité, d'envie de cinéma et de passé qu'on exhume. Souvent cru, parfois drôle, parfois dérangeant, Quarante brasse les formes autant que les questions.
