Florida, 1830 - Of all eastern Native American tribes, only the Seminoles have resisted being moved to reservations. Having retreated to Florida, they live a simple horticultural life. But white plantation owners, angry at the increasing numbers of black slaves fleeing to Seminole protection, want to take their land. Plantation owner Raynes, in particular, has convinced the military to wipe out the Seminoles. His rival Moore, a sawmill owner from the North who has a Seminole wife, is against slavery and considers it unprofitable. Chief Osceola sees the coming danger; he tries to avoid provoking the whites, but cannot prevent the war that breaks out in 1835.

In three episodes about six people, the film takes on the topics of relationships, difficult social engagements , and love in the German Democratic Republic.

Shortly after the end of World War II, young carpenter Achim is sent to a remote farm to do some repair work. Three women from different generations administer the farm on their own: Daughter, mother, and grandmother. There are no men around since grandmother Hanna has lost her husband in World War I, and mother Gertrud’s husband died in World War II. Although daughter Heidi is old enough to marry, she is neither engaged nor married. Thus, hardworking, yet shy Achim is the only man around.

The young communist Artur Becker fights with the Interbrigades against the Franco putschists during the Spanish Civil War. He had experienced his baptism of fire in Germany at the time of the Weimar Republic during the Kapp Putsch. He was seriously wounded and arrested. After an unsuccessful escape attempt, he was interrogated several times by Spanish and German putschists and then shot.
