In Part I we see the young would-be swordsman setting out to achieve greatness in war, achieving nothing because fighting on the losing side, & then beginning his long period of wandering & training, with the goal always in mind of his duel with Kojiro. Part II builds toward that great duel on Ganryu Island, with considerable focus on Musashi's planning & forethought as to how to gain an advantage.

Tora se retrouve par hasard en compagnie d’un homme avec un bébé. Le lendemain matin, l’homme a disparu. Il n’a pas d’autre choix que de se rendre à Shibamata avec l’enfant.

Dans l’auberge où il travaille, Tora est amoureux de Kinuyo, dont le mari est porté disparu. Il retourne à Shibamata où il parle d’elle. Sakura et Hiroshi l’accompagne pour arranger leur mariage.

À Shibamata, les Kuruma ont décidé de louer une chambre à une belle femme nommée Yûko, une parente éloignée de tante Tsune. De retour chez lui, le très sensible Tora en tombe naturellement amoureux d'elle.
