Dans un Moscou futuriste des années 1930, cette adaptation du roman de Boulgakov suit un écrivain célèbre, déchu après la censure de sa pièce sur Ponce Pilate. Rejeté, il rencontre Marguerite, une femme mariée qui devient sa muse et l'inspire à écrire un nouveau roman. Dans son récit, Satan visite Moscou et y provoque des événements surnaturels. Marguerite, transformée en sorcière, retrouve son amant après la mort, dans un ballet macabre entre réalité et magie.

26 avril 1986, la catastrophe nucléaire à Tchernobyl est en cours. Bientôt les nappes phréatiques risquent d'être contaminées sans l'intervention de l'homme. Les scientifiques et les représentants du Kremlin appellent au courage et à la loyauté patriotique de trois hommes. Les volontaires doivent plonger dans des eaux contaminées du sous-sol du réacteur n°4 qui vient d'exploser afin de vider le réservoir. Ces trois hommes sont communément appelés l’escouade-suicide.

En 1941, opération Barbarossa, invasion de l'URSS par l'armée allemande. Après avoir décimé avec un seul T-34 la compagnie blindée du capitaine Klaus Jäger dans des combats aux abords du village de Volokolamsk, le chauffeur Vassilionok et le lieutenant Ivouchkine, rescapés, sont faits prisonniers par Jäger. Au printemps 1944, le commandement de la Wehrmacht confie à Jäger, devenu colonel, la direction du camp d'entraînement d'Ohrdruf (en Thuringe) et d'y ouvrir un centre de préparation pour les troupes blindées d'élite. Les Allemands doivent utiliser comme cibles d'entraînement un T-34 soviétique qu'ils ont récemment capturé. C'est le prisonnier Ivouchkine qui doit le commander avec d'autres prisonniers comme « chair à canon », mais il profite de manœuvres et de la confusion qu'ils sèment pour s'échapper. Ivouchkine et ses hommes tentent de gagner la frontière tchèque qui est à 350 kilomètres, tandis qu'ils sont poursuivis par une demi-douzaine de Panthers commandés par Jäger.

Mexico. 1940. The agent of the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs (NKVD) Ramon Merkader comes to the house of Leon Trotsky. Under a long leather raincoat he hides an ice pick. He is here to kill the unsuspecting Russian revolutionary. Moscow. 2019. The modest honours pupil Yura helps his schoolmate Masha in history. They just study Merkader’s murder of Trotsky. The uninhibited Masha decides to tempt nerdy Yura. The director of studies comes into the classroom in the most intense moment. Afterwards the school principal calls in the class teacher of Masha and Yura for a talk. He considers that such an irresponsible teacher has no place at the school and is set to dismiss her. The school bell rings. As if by magic, the endings of these three stories intertwine, giving rise to a new surprising reading of the known events.
