Le film est basé sur une nouvelle du célèbre écrivain Stoviet qui a servi sur le front, Emmanuil Kazakevich "Deux dans la steppe" et les journaux de guerre de Konstantin Simonov.

Moscou, 1902. Le célèbre metteur en scène Konstantin Stanislavsky, à la recherche d'inspiration pour mettre en scène une nouvelle pièce, décide de se familiariser avec la vie de la ville « du bas ». Il se tourne vers Vladimir Gilyarovsky, un expert reconnu des bidonvilles de Moscou, pour obtenir de l'aide. Ensemble, ils se rendent chez le légendaire bandit Khitrovka et se retrouvent mêlés à l'enquête sur le meurtre...
