1984, à la recherche d'une expérience plus profonde que la superficialité de notre civilisation moderne, Bruno Manser, un activiste écologiste suisse, voyage au coeur de la jungle de Borneo en Malaisie. Il y rencontre les Penan, une tribu nomade avec qui il décide de vivre. Cette expérience le marquera à vie. Malheureusement, la déforestation des forêts commence durant son séjour parmi les Penan.
