Jiro Kokubu a été élu capitaine du club de Kendo de son université. Son objectif : remporter le prochain tournoi inter-universitaire. Sa méthode : imposer à son corps une discipline de fer et ne vivre que pour la victoire. Le cadet du club, Mibu, admire la vie spartiate de Kokubu et voit en lui un mentor. Mais le vétéran Kagawa critique l'intransigeance et l'idéalisme du capitaine. Pour lui, le kendo peut s'accommoder d'une vie sociale normale. Il affirme que l'ascèse de Kokubu est une imposture. Alors que le tournoi approche, la rivalité entre les deux hommes va tourner au drame…

Ide of the Kokusai Rayon Company visits a supermarket and finds cheap shirts being passed off as his company's products. But a closer look reveals that the last letter of "Kokusai" has been changed to "n" and reads "Kokusan." The buyers, however, are all under the impression that they are buying Kokusai shirts. Ide begins an investigation to find out where the shirts are being made, but before he is able to uncover anything, he is killed on a train and his little black book, filled with secret data, is stolen. Sugino then starts a one-man search for both the killer and the factory turning out the cheap shirts.

Ririko Tachibana moved to Tokyo in reliance on her aunt Motoko, who lives in Tokyo. When Ririko leaves her classmate Chizuko Misawa, who says she is going to rely on jazz singer Michi Nozoe, and arrives at her aunt's house, she is disappointed to find that a job has been arranged for her as a nanny. Her dream of attending night high school was dashed, but Ririko made up her mind to do her best to do as much as she could. The Honbashi family, where she was employed, lived alone with the widow Shinae, and Mrs Shinae was asked to go to her daughters' house to help out...
