Dakota n'est pas une étudiante comme les autres : quelques années auparavant, elle a été enlevée et séquestrée par un psychopathe qui abusait d'elle et de deux autres jeunes filles, jusqu'à leur libération par la police. Elle suit tant bien que mal les cours de psychochologie du docteur Campbell, spécialiste des traumatismes graves, mais son quotidien est perturbé. En effet, une autre étudiante, Addie, veut se lier avec elle et parler de son passé. Par ailleurs, un mystérieux harceleur fait tout pour lui rappeler son calvaire avec des détails que seul le coupable pourrait connaître. Dakota soupçonne tout le monde : son professeur et même Addie. Elle tente de résoudre le mystère avec l'aide du séduisant Max, l'assistant de Campbell.
