Au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale, Claude (10 ans), fils de résistants communistes dont la mère est morte à Auschwitz et Ben (14 ans), enfant d’une prostituée et d’un petit truand affrontent, avec Françoise Dolto, les démons qui les hantent. Ils se rencontrent grâce à elle, deviennent amis, vivent ensemble une aventure exceptionnelle, puis se séparent pour connaître des trajectoires opposées. Nous assistons à travers ces deux cas traités, mais aussi ceux d’autres enfants en grande difficulté, au travail quotidien d’un médecin exceptionnel, inventeur d’une discipline : la psychanalyse pour enfants.
