Dans un petit village d'Écosse où il vient de prendre ses fonctions, un jeune prêtre rencontre une jolie gitane qui bouleverse sa vie. Tiré d'un roman de J.M. Barrie (le père de "Peter Pan"), ce drame offre l'un de ses premiers grands rôles à une Katharine Hepburn d'autant plus envoûtante que l'atmosphère typiquement écossaise apporte une touche de mystère.

En 1939 à Belham, près de Londres, vit la famille Miniver : Kay, Clem son mari et leurs trois enfants Vin, Toby et Judy. La guerre vient bouleverser le calme paisible de leur quotidien. Vin s’engage dans la Royal Air Force et se fiance avec Carol Beldon. M. Miniver, faisant partie de la défense passive, est appelé pour évacuer les soldats anglais bloqués à Dunkerque. Pendant son absence, Kay découvre un aviateur allemand blessé et affamé qui la menace. Après l’avoir désarmé, elle le livre aux autorités. Les bombardements allemands s’intensifient mais la vie continue malgré tout, leur vie s’écoulant le plus souvent dans des abris de fortune. Vin se marie avec Carol. Au beau milieu de la traditionnelle fête florale de Belham, survient un raid aérien allemand. En rentrant, la voiture de Mme Miniver est mitraillée, blessant à mort Carol...

We find con-man Ingraham Steward living by his wits by steering wealthy Paris visitors to sellers of fake paintings and other assorted dodges. He and his wife, Agatha, have been separated for 15 years, but he promises to give their daughter, Joyce, a lavish wedding at his "château" in France. The fact that he doesn't have a château in France is just a minor trifle. He induces the caretaker, Bill Cherau, of a large country estate to allow it to be used for the wedding. The wedding party arrives and Bill falls madly in love with Joyce and she with him, but a gal has gotta do what a gal has gotta do, and her intended marriage to stuffed-shirt Horace Miller stays on the books. But Steward has a change of heart and he tells one and all that he and his friends, Von Gersdorff, Lefevre, Iznamof, Clifton Summitt and Sasch, are all frauds and crooks. Horace and his family stalk out, which is just fine with Joyce as her true love, the caretaker, is waiting on the grounds.
