A bombed city under martial law and powers on the verge of a new war gives home to deceit and uncertainty in 1948 Vienna. The city, divided among the allied powers, is also hosting the filming of The Third Man. Its star, American actor Orson Welles, spends his after-hours in the well-known Hotel Orient, soon to be disturbed by Soviet troops led by a young officer. On his mind is only one mission: how can he use the strengths and weaknesses of the great Orson to change the course of history, while in the U.S. big Hollywood names are targeted in the Red Scare initiating the McCarthy era?

Alter Ego est une série dramatique et mystérieuse qui se déroule dans un monde unique où la mort se déplace parmi la population pour accomplir sa tâche : toucher ceux dont la "dernière heure" a sonné. Dans son repaire, la banque internationale Salvator, les nombreux clones de la Mort n'ont qu'une seule apparence. Celle d'une jeune femme élégante aux cheveux roux. Une fois que les clones se déplacent parmi nous, ils prennent l'apparence de leur alter ego, qui est différent pour chaque clone. La Mort est impitoyable, séduisante et inarrêtable.

Chaque épisode de la série raconte un suivi de dossier d'une personne disparue par la Cellule des personnes disparues de la Police fédérale belge , qui s'occupe des disparitions, de l'identification de personnes et de restes humains.
