Palerme. Ida Di Giulio découvre que son mari fait partie d'une organisation mafieuse commandée par Don Cesare et lorsqu'il est arrêté par la police, le commissaire Bellomo lui dit qu'elle doit s'enfuir car elle est dans le viseur de la mafia sicilienne. Elle prend donc un train pour Gênes, avec son fils Salvatore. Ici, elle rencontre une femme de son âge, Gabriella, et son fils Tuccio, qui se dirigent vers New York pour épouser Pasquale Vitaliano.
